[Following is a volunteer review of "A King Amongst Us" by A.D. Lewis.]
The story is set on the isle of Sit-Nalta, where King Augustus and Titus, also known as Raven, reside. The narrative begins with the coliseum hosting a gladiatorial tournament called The Gauntlet, where Titus is brought to face the dissidents from across the isle. Titus was brought to the palace by raiding and destroying his home when he was a child. The question arises whether he will survive as a slave to the king and be able to exact his revenge.
The novel also includes a bit of mythology towards the end, which was unexpected. However, the lead characters of the story were not well developed, and the story felt rushed. It can be read if you don't have much time, but the end could be made better. The novel kept the reader engaged from the start, but in my personal opinion, the characters can be further developed, and more depth can be added to the story and the ending.
The novel can be recommended to readers who enjoy fiction with a mild horror element. However, it is not suitable for all audiences as it contains certain adulterous scenes that can be disturbing for some. Overall, I would give a it 3 out of 5 rating based on the plot and grammatical errors.
Despite its flaws, the story does have its strengths. The setting is vividly described, and the gladiatorial tournament scenes are well-written. The mythology that is introduced towards the end of the novel adds an unexpected twist to the story.
However, the lack of character development does detract from the overall enjoyment of the novel. It is difficult to feel invested in the characters and their actions when they are not fully fleshed out. The rushed pacing also makes it challenging to fully appreciate the story's potential.
In conclusion, while A King Amongst Us has its merits, it falls short in terms of character development and pacing. Nonetheless, it is still worth a read for those who enjoy fantasy, and horror and are not deterred by the presence of certain adult content.
