Opaque, by Calix Leigh-Reign, follows the journey of two 16-year-olds, Adam and Carly, who discover they possess supernatural abilities inherited from extinct Russian bloodlines. They find themselves hunted by a group of scientists called the Iksha, who seek to exterminate them. As they navigate this perilous situation, the series explores themes of bravery, determination, and familial bonds, weaving together an engaging narrative filled with adventure and intrigue. And this was just the first book in the Scion Saga series.

The plot was original and very exciting with its exploration of extinct Russian bloodlines and supernatural abilities. At first, the book was a bit slow and honestly wasn’t that interesting, but after some chapters, it got really intriguing and exciting. After a point, I was so immersed in the book that I finished it in one sitting. I really liked how the characters were written; the character development was top tiered, and the characters were morally ambiguous and realistic.  There wasn’t just action in the book; there was also love and bonds between characters, which were heartwarming.

One bad thing would be that the world building was complex and sometimes difficult to follow, but not enough to deduct a star. One potential drawback could be the stereotypical antagonist, which, in my opinion, was just right for this book, but some people may not like that.

This book was very well edited, and I couldn’t find a single error. I would give this book four out of four stars, and I would recommend this book to fans of young adult fiction who enjoy supernatural thrillers. Those who enjoy fast-paced plots with well-developed characters and intriguing world-building will likely enjoy diving into the adventures of Adam and Carly. Additionally, I would like to say that this book is suitable for adult audiences because of the language and some adult themes in the book.
