Solaris Seethes (Solaris Saga book 1), by Janet McNutty, is one of four books and is a Sci-Fi/Fantasy that follows Rynah, who is determined to find a way to fix her dying home planet. With her new found crew, (Alfric, Tom, Solon, Brie, and Solaris, her grandfather’s ship), she just might reach her goal but will Rynah be able to handle the unseeable dangers that come with her task and space travel?

The plot of Solaris is a simple one that involves adventure, trust, and action, and pulls the reader in. The point of view is from Rynah, who is our main character, and is in a third person perspective. The writing is very detailed and the words work to create a world, so that we readers can get an understanding of a world beyond our own. Even though the writing style is descriptive (in situations and settings), the fast pace storytelling leaves little room for dull moments but upon finishing, I did find that some scenes felt rushed, especially towards the end.

One of the main reasons this book was a good read was because of the characters: Alfric, Tom, Solon, Brie and Solaris. Their interactions with each other was very loving and a joy to read but I wish there was more of these interactions and at times, I felt as if they were pushed to the background. The five characters were very relatable and realistic, expressing feelings all of us could understand. Rynah, on the other hand, was not relatable and wasn’t that likeable. She does get some good development, which I was glad to see, but by the end of the book, any development she had was stripped away.

The characters were one of the things that I liked best about reading Solaris because they remained me of people I would admire and their personalities were consistent. They were well balanced and kept the story going. On the other hand, the one thing that I disliked was that the antagonist, Klanor, felt flat and I saw that he didn’t have a motive for his actions, though since this is the first book in the series I can overlook his lack of motive and I hope we will learn more about Klanor.

Events that took place in this book mimicked situations that would happen within other books of Sci-fi/Fantasy and the story didn’t really bring anything new to the genre. However, this book would be good to read if you’re one who is not familiar with this genre. The plot is easy to follow and it gives you a basic understanding of how Sci-Fi/ Fantasy works.

Even though Solaris Seethes was an enjoyable read and I had a good time reading about space and different planets, I would rate 3 out of 4 because I feel like the characters could have been more fleshed out and more unique situations could have been involved. There are a lot of ups and downs but the outcomes were predictable and didn’t create any suspense or tension. Overall, I am looking forward to reading the next book (Solaris Seeks) to see how the plot continues.

I am yet to read a book in this genre. Good to know that it was interesting and you enjoyed it regardless of the fact that the characters were not well fleshed out. Thank you for the review.

I also reviewed this book. I agree with your observation that Rynah was not very likeable but that the other characters were enjoyable. Good review.
