[Following is a volunteer review of "Essential Advice for Buying Your First Home and Navigating through the Mortgage Loan Process" by Diana Donnelly.]
I rate this book 3 out of 5. If you are someone looking to understand the home buying process, this is a great resource to use. This book walks you through every step of the home buying process, from saving up money to moving day. All the different terms are accompanied by thorough definitions, so you don't have to go elsewhere to understand what is being discussed. This book could've been made better by showing actual examples. For instance, if at the beginning you get to "meet" a couple wanting to purchase a home, and after you learn about each step of the process, this couple goes through that step for their own home purchase, you can get more of a feel for how things would happen in real life instead of just reading a very textbook version of the process. It would also be a helpful addition to add some graphics to help the reader better visualize the different numbers. Different terms are accompanied by thorough definitions, so you don't have to go elsewhere to understand what is being discussed. All the different parts of a loan or mortgage payment are very confusing when just written out versus seeing a pie chart or diagram of some sort. There are mentions of a few times things may go wrong, but they are outlined in a separate section containing all the options for exiting a deal if the seller fails to hold up their end of the contract. Overall, this book is a wonderful starting point for those who have no prior knowledge about how the buying process works. It is clear and concise without any pressure and includes some advice and tools to help you in your journey to becoming a first-time home buyer. The author is very knowledgeable in this field and has been working in the industry for years, which aids in the ability to share this information with others.
