Review of Just Die

[Following is a volunteer review of "Just Die" by E Alan Fleischauer.]
Just Die by E Alan Fleischauer is a crime thriller with a unique story line. Jake Silver awakes from a stroke with the amazing ability to kill someone by just pointing his finger at this and saying the words, “Just Die”. Silver’s life is turned upside down, first by surviving a stroke and then by obtaining supernatural abilities which the doctors believe were initiated with the cutting-edge stroke treatment he received. Silver’s fiancée, Beth, remains his faithful partner through the series of trials and emotional highs and lows that Silver experiences while coming to terms with his new powers. An unlikely partner in crime is found in Silver’s nurse / ex-football legend who also comes to his aide throughout the story.
The story is an interesting read, and it piqued my curiosity on how it would end. However, I found Silver’s character a little fickle and unbelievable. Initially indifferent to the death of his fellow hospital patient, then overwhelming guilt after his first hit, only to quickly transition to remorseless killing within a short span.
There are several auxiliary characters that seem to have their own story line that only tie in loosely with the main story plot. The police investigation sub plot was useful initially in moving the story along, but it was prolonged without serving any real purpose.
The final twist in the story was unexpected but it felt very arbitrary – almost like the author felt like he needed to add in something extra – but in my opinion was unnecessary – again an auxiliary character where he had to “tie up loose ends”.
I would recommend this book as it was enjoyable, unique, and interesting. Although the auxiliary characters were concluded, I felt that there was more to expect from the three main characters and can see a potential sequel as I feel that there is much more that can be done with this story’s plot.
