I consider Niching Up by Chris Dreyer a great guidebook, especially for those looking to grow their entrepreneurship. The author shares his personal experiences with 'niching' because he seeks to help others in the same position he once was—starting a business and unsure of what path is best for them.

Dreyer’s advice, embodied in his writing, can be applied to any aspect of your life. A core aspect of the guidance revolves around devoting effort and focus to one thing over many. 'Expertise is about both education and application,' is a quote Dreyer emphasises. While many see the success, few people understand the hours and effort involved in achieving those successes.

I love how open Dreyer is as he writes. He doesn’t want anyone jumping in thinking niching is all sunshine and rainbows. In the first chapter of the book (after the introduction), he provides the reader with the possible disadvantages of specialising in a niche. The remaining 7 chapters (plus a conclusion) focus on niching as a concept.

A rundown of the chapters looks like this: how to niche, the benefits of expertise, expertise as it translates to wealth, building trust with clients, compound interest in relationships, using referrals to your advantage, and niching as it relates to increasing efficiency. Not only does he give clear disadvantages, but he also lays out his own life as a case study so the reader can learn from his successes.

Dreyer also makes plenty of references and analogies using popular and sports culture, allowing me to better understand and relate to what he was saying.

I’m also going to comment on the quality of the book itself. Niching Up was clearly professionally edited, and I did not find any clear errors throughout reading. Kudos to Dreyer and his team for writing a book of quality and value.

All in all, I would rate Niching Up by Chris Dreyer a 4 out of 5. Honestly, this book would be my first recommendation for anyone looking to become a specialist in their field, but I would also recommend it to anyone seeking to grow their business.
