This is a quote from the author as he explains the advantages and disadvantages of niching up. This book entirely speaks about niching up, that is, concentrating on one field and developing expertise. The benefits of niching up are: having a great awareness of the opportunities open to you; being able to charge premium prices; more easily converting prospects to clients; having better relationships with those in your industry; giving referrals; and becoming more efficient.
The cons are: there is a smaller market when one niches, there is competition after others realize your success, there is a lack of diversity in your work, there are industry risks, there is a fight for product perfection, and there is increased effort and sacrifice for buyers. One should strive for competency in business. This creates confidence and passion. Going for a niche should be done after one has had experience in various fields and determined which field he is competent and passionate about. I love the author's simple language in the book. I was able to understand details about niching up. The author is very clear in his writing. He is an expert in personal injury, and I felt that he was the right person to speak about it. He speaks about continuity and consistency in our services. This is what is affecting most businesses nowadays. He was also very open in explaining to us about his journey to starting up and the way he mentioned that we go into business to make money. This is a fact; the majority go in there to make money. The author also gave various examples to make us understand, like when one has heart problems, he or she is willing to pay any amount just for recovery. This is what happens around us.
There is nothing to dislike in the book. The successes of people like Joe Ride and Henry Ford are worth emulation. The positives above and the perfect editing made me give this book a perfect rating. I rate Niching Up by Chris Dreyer 5 out of 5 stars. I realized that we normally pay high because of the experience and expertise someone has in a specific field. We should also understand that not everyone will accept our prices in business, but we should target a small segment that appreciates the value of the product we offer.
I recommend this book to everyone interested in business. It teaches that we should aim at having expertise in one field and using it to make high profits. Those who are already in the field and are having doubts or challenges should also read it. This book creates a positive view of business and provides elements of growth.
