The book Play Golf Better Faster: The Classic Guide to Optimizing Your Performance and Building Your Best Fast by Kalliope Barlis is all about positive thinking and hard work. According to Barlis, if you believe in something hard enough that you can imagine it in your mind, the more likely it will happen, assuming you also put in the hardwork to try to achieve what you want.

Something new I learned from the book is to avoid using the word "not" because, according to Barlis, the human brain does not hear that word. Instead, try using direct commands. Instead of telling an unruly child to "do not throw your toys", tell him to "put your toy down" or "give mommy the toy" instead. Tried this on my toddler and it actually works.

However, what I don't like about the book are the run-on sentences and lousy, unclear instructions. I had a hard time trying to understand what the author was saying, especially in the exercise parts. For example, how does someone even do this? Barlis says "Very simply, run an undesirable memory backward in black and white and sense it vaporize just before the memory disappears." For a book that's supposed to give tips on improving one's self, the instructions given are pretty hard to understand, therefore making them ineffective. Last, I think the author could also pick better words to describe things to best get her point across. For example, use "mind" instead of "brain". Instead of saying replay something repeatedly in your brain, it would be more appropriate to say replay something repeatedly in your mind.

Due to these, I rate this book a 3 out of 5 stars. Although very informative, the way the information was presented was very confusing. Add the grammar errors and it became a dragging book for me. People who want to improve their golf, can try this book to see if it will really help them improve their game. People who are not interested in golf might find the book boring and irritating to read due to the run-on sentences and grammar errors.
