PHOBIA RELIEF (From Fear to Freedom) by KALLIOPE BARLIS is a book that I read with an initial note of prejudice, thinking that if things were really that simple, then what is the point of facing life with all the load of fears that we carry? Is it really that simple to live a peaceful and balanced life? Is it possible to get rid of irrational fears in such a simple and immediate way? Well, apparently, it's all a matter of training and controlling the mind to think in a concrete and positive way about the future that awaits us, starting from the present. Thinking about negative things is, in fact, a counterproductive behaviour that reinforces the bad memory "or the fear within the pathways of the brain".
All of us are born with two fears: the fear of falling and fear of loud noises. All other fears are learned throughout life and can therefore be overcome and unlearned.
Kalliope Barlis is an expert in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, meaning she improves the lives of people by making them more mindful of how they think and what they do. In the book she offers a step-by-step instruction for getting rid of illogical fears and phobias by using Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques.
The book turned out to be an interesting read (rating a 4 out of 5), written so simply and to the point, just down to what and how to do it. This simplicity and immediacy of writing translates into very basic syntactic structures, with the use of commonly used terms to explain key concepts, making the book accessible to everyone.
I particularly appreciated the motto - “Change the way you think; it will change how you feel, and therefore change what you can do”-, because at the end of the book, I understood that those who manage to build a life free from many irrational fears actualize and make concrete the words contained in these few lines.
After all, to use the author's words: "When we shrink the fear and “blink it black to white” several times, the fear loses its power, and that’s just the start that gives you more control of your life so you’re in the driver’s seat, wherever you may go... Some people say it’s all in your mind. And it is. So, make it happen".
It would have been more useful, though, to insert more examples of people who have concretely overcome irrational fears after having faced a journey in Neuro-Linguistic Programming; a single example of a few pages is not strong enough to actualize the purpose of the book, that is to help the reader on his journey to freedom.
