"We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz is a captivating fantasy novel that delves into the lives of its characters and the magnificent kingdom of Voulhire. The story primarily follows Galen, a young refugee seeking solace and a fresh start in Voulhire, hoping to take charge of the forge left behind by his late uncle. Galen's journey from a war-torn land to this newfound haven is marked by a poignant struggle to adapt to a life so different from what he's known.
Accompanied by his friend Rowan, Galen explores the kingdom, oblivious to the impending disasters plaguing other parts of Voulhire. Meanwhile, Eldus Alderman, a former judge, is dispatched by King Wilhelm to govern the quiet yet underdeveloped town of Hillport. This seemingly tranquil place hides a dark history of suffering under the rule of its previous lords, Orlin and the dreaded mage Meldorath. As Eldus endeavours to transform Hillport into a thriving coastal hub, he grapples with the daunting task of living up to Meldorath's ominous legacy.
The narrative of "We Are Voulhire" predominantly revolves around these two central characters, although we also gain occasional glimpses into the minds of other figures in the story. Matthew Tysz has masterfully crafted this novel, meticulously weaving a plot with no unresolved threads. The book transports readers to a beautifully constructed universe and timeline that beckons us to immerse ourselves in its splendour. While some characters may bear familiar traits, they are expertly developed and highly relatable, making it feel like each has an intricate backstory waiting to be unveiled.
Tysz's storytelling prowess shines throughout the book. His ability to vividly depict various scenes and locales is genuinely remarkable. The aspect that stands out the most is Tysz's talent for interweaving the perspectives of these characters, drawing them all into a singular event that culminates in a gripping climax.
In conclusion, "We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" unquestionably deserves a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The book is impeccably edited and exquisitely written. It confronts the dark facets of humanity, depicting its imperfections and the propensity for conflict and war, regardless of the universe in which we reside. The narrative carries profound messages and moral lessons that are perceptible to those who seek them. Filled with action, humour, and enchantment at every turn, this book is a must-read for fans of series like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson. I wholeheartedly recommend it to fellow fantasy enthusiasts, assuring that the enthralling world of Voulhire will keep you engrossed, eagerly turning the pages into the late hours of the night.
