Review of Phobia Relief

[Following is a volunteer review of "Phobia Relief" by Kalliope Barlis.]
The book Phobia Relief by the author Kalliope Barlis is a challenging book to summarize, partly because it is so short; the entire book is less than 80 pages. Once you get past the first 15 pages, you finally dive into the book. Kalliope Barlis introduces readers to the ideas and teachings of Richard Bandler on his behavior control methodology called Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). She shares her own experiences with clients and how she helps them confront their fears. This book is not only intended for people looking to overcome fear but also for those interested in learning this method to assist others.
I was drawn to this book because I have dealt with anxiety and claustrophobia for years. Unfortunately, I did not find this book useful at all. The only thing I liked about this book was its brevity.
There were several aspects of this book that I did not appreciate. The biggest issue I had with this book was that the author repeatedly suggested that people with phobias are stupid or behaving ridiculously. The main message of the book seems to be that you just need to change your mindset about phobias. As someone who has undergone therapy for anxiety and phobias, I can attest that it is not as simple as acknowledging that your fear is irrational or that your reaction is exaggerated. All the therapists I have worked with have been compassionate and understanding.
I have to commend this book for not having any spelling or grammatical mistakes that I could find. However, I do not believe this book is very well-edited because it contains a substantial amount of filler before getting to the relevant information. Additionally, parts of the book are presented in the form of transcripts of sessions with clients, which I found confusing and unhelpful. Overall, I do not believe I can give this more than 1 star out of 4.
Because this book is based on the work of Richard Bandler, whom the author refers to as Dr, even though he has never completed a doctorate. It is clear that he is more of a self-help guru and may not be credible. His work may sound dubious if you are familiar with the field. Therefore, I do not recommend this book to anyone.
