[Following is a volunteer review of "Swimming in a Sea of Stars" by Julie Wright.]
Swimming in a Sea of Stars is a novel by Julie Wright. The story follows five teenagers over the course of one day as they each struggle with their own personal challenges. The main characters are teenagers whose life experiences the author uses to teach readers lessons. Addison is a girl who recently attempted suicide and is trying to find her way back to life.
Damian, a TikTok-famous boy who is desperate for attention and connection; Avery, a loner who is struggling to fit in and find her place in the world; Kai, a transgender boy who is coming to terms with his identity; and Eden, a girl who is dealing with the grief of her mother's death
The novel explores themes of suicide, grief, loss, self-harm, bullying, addiction, and family. It is a powerful story about how, even in the darkest of times, there is always hope. The title of the book refers to the bioluminescent plankton that can be found in some parts of the ocean. These plankton emit a blue light that can make the water look like a sea of stars. The author uses this image to represent the interconnectedness of all living things and the power of hope to light up even the darkest of nights. I like the title of the book. It is fitting in a poetic way.
I enjoyed reading the book. The author is crafty, and her descriptions are vivid. I found nothing to dislike about the book. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I didn't find any grammatical errors, showing that it was well edited.
Swimming in a Sea of Stars has been praised for its sensitive handling of difficult topics, its strong characters, and its hopeful message. I recommend this book to those who are victims of abuse. The author uses this medium to tell them that it is alright to speak up whenever they are ready.
