[Following is a volunteer review of "By The Rivers of Babylon" by Mary Glickman.]
By the Rivers of Babylon written by Mary Glickman is a fictional story about a young Jewish couple, Joe and Abigail Becker. Joe, a successful author of children's books and Abigail, an elementary school teacher, uproot their lives in Massachusetts to begin a life in the countryside.
After inheriting a home that once belonged to Abigail's grandaunt, Joe and Abigail leave their city life in Boston behind and move to Sweetgrass Island, a beautiful, rural town in South Carolina.
It isn't long after their arrival in Sweetgrass that the beautiful Abigail Becker catches the attention of Sweetgrass Island's beloved and notorious philanderer, Billy Euston. Billy uses his good old boy appeal and charms his way into the Becker's lives through the guise of friendship. But Billy, being the fickle hearted lover he is, has other intentions with Abigail.
Joe Becker is enchanted by the countryside and the unfamiliar culture of Sweetgrass's small town community. As an author, he finds himself distracted by the lives and stories of his new agrarian home and is unaware of the depth of friendship growing between his wife Abigail and Billy Euston. The two soon leave a wake of heartache and betrayal that wreaks havoc on the tightknit community of Sweetgrass. And leaves Joe to wonder where he fits in, in the small town he has grown to love and now calls home.
I found By the Rivers of Babylon to be suspenseful, emotional, and touching. A story filled with love, lust, drama, heartbreak, betrayal, friendship, loyalty, kindness, and strength in community. Mary Glickman wrote an incredibly beautiful story about ordinary people and their journeys in relation to the complex circumstances and choices life often brings. I would highly recommend this book to any reader who enjoys a good suspenseful narrative that leaves you feeling whole.
After reading this book I have chosen to give it a 4 out of 5 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I found it difficult to put down at times. The author did such an amazing job introducing and describing each character throughout the book. I could really visualize and hear the people of Sweetgrass. My only complaint, however, is when it came to the comparison between Joe and Billy. I felt that the comparison lost its eloquence part way through, and it was difficult to grasp a visual of Billy Euston. Which is why I felt I could only give this book 4 out of 5 stars instead of the 5 out of 5 the storyline deserves.
