[Following is a volunteer review of "Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures" by Catherine A. Pepe.]
Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe is a children's book which gives the beautiful tale of 10 year old girl Mary Grace and her younger brother Donny. Donny is a five-year-old boy with Down syndrome who has an enthusiastic soul, lives with his sister Mary Grace and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Miller in Wichita.
Mr. Miller served as a priest and rector at St. James Episcopal Church, while Mrs. Miller was a civil engineer. When their parents accept an assignment in Kenya given to them by the church, Mary Grace and Donny must move to California to live with their grandparents. Donny is excited as always, but Mary Grace is sad to leave all her friends as she doesn't know anyone in California. There she faces a bully and must deal with a new environment. Read this book to find out how Mary Grace handled the situation gracefully and overcame the bully with the help of her grandparents.
I really adored the sibling's love between Mary Grace and Donny, the way she always considered her brother in every situation. Grace is more than just Donny's sister, she is a great companion to him, constantly having the finest fun with him and providing him with wonderful memories to cherish. I liked how the author progressed gradually through Mary Grace's character development. I was impressed by the way author treated Donny as same as everyone, not treating him differently because of his disability.
In conclusion, I would like to rate Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe, 4 out of 4 and 5 out of 5, since the language used in this book is simple and easy to understand. This book gives the parents a glimpse of difficult situations like bullying, faced by children in school. It would be a good bedtime story for the kids.
