[Following is a volunteer review of "Niching Up" by Chris Dreyer.]
When I take this book I was not sure what to expect exactly. Author is talking about his own experience with searching for his niche in which he could specilize. He also gives other examples from his live, when he started to focus on a niche to learn it perfectly and than to be the best in it.
One of this examples is how he larn to play poker. He spend a lot of hours, review several thousands hands, and than he took part in the poker tournament and win quiet high.
The other example is from author's experience with the game called Legend of the Five Rings, where he became very good player because he was concentrating on learning and knowing one clan, which aloud him to excel in it and won two state championships in two years.
There are a lot of information about how to start, what are cons and pros, and how to use it wisely.
The author advices that before choosing our niche we should start with wider field of our interest and find out in which we part of it we are the best and enjoy it mostly. And we also need to get a lot of experience.
Sometimes to become an expert in our field we need to spend thousands hours in learning and mastering it. We also should learn from experts to become expert ourselves.
Then we have to consider all cons, such as smaller market, waste (cost more money), competition, lack of diversity (you might get bored with doing all the time the same thing), industry risk, product perfection, increased effort and sacrifice for buyers when they have to buy what they need in few different places instead of one.
Two become an expert we need to learn first and then we need to apply our knowledge in a practice.
Later author advices how to choose good price for what we are doing and when we can increase it.
The other thing which is good to do is to create relationship of equity with other people who are working in our or related field. And to have also referrals people to be able to send to them clients whom we could not help in exact time.
I give it strong 3 out of 4 points, and 4 out of 5, because for me it is good, worthy to read if you are seriously thinking about looking for your own niche, but it is not for me amazing book or one the best books ever.
