[Following is a volunteer review of "Niching Up" by Chris Dreyer.]
Niching Up: The Narrower the Market, the Bigger the Prize is easy to read, and also includes ample examples. The writing is conversational. Overall the book offers real-world examples of the decision-making process for niching. The insights within Niching Up are applicable to really anyone, but especially for those in the workforce in some capacity. Throughout the book, the author walks us through the pros and cons of developing a niche, the exploration needed to move yourself from a broader, generalist market focus to an expert niched up focus. He creatively uses real life examples from role playing games, sports, and of course, business.
Being an expert allows you to charge more for your services and being an expert in your niche brings you wealth and status. These can motivate a desire to stand out and be the expert, and when someone wants the outcome (Niche) you offer, they are willing to pay for it (your prize). The author reminds us throughout his book that there is risk with niching and you must find the opportunities to put in the time, learn from others, practice, and apply to create your expertise.
The author threads his own lessons with storytelling, personal experiences, and books, movies, and pop culture references that provide readers with a clear pathway to take action. Niching is a personal choice, one best made after exploring the validity of your chosen niche. Your niche gives you authority as you develop into the “go-to” expert for your type of business. Trust in you, your work, and your expertise allow you to charge higher fees (the prize!), testing the market to know your worth.
I give this book 4 out of 5 stars; it was informative and I enjoyed reading it!
