Review of Whispered Secrets Whispered Prayers

[Following is a volunteer review of "Whispered Secrets Whispered Prayers" by Donna Mack.]
Whispered Secrets Whispered Prayers tells the story of German immigrants who find themselves in midwestern America living on a farm. Through the story we learn the history of Lars and Margaret, who have three children. The lives of Margaret and her children are changed with the death of Lars. Urs' life has always seemed tough, from losing fingers as a baby, to the deaths of both parents, to being "sold" to a hard life working on a farm. Margaret and Urs find their way to each other and we see them raising Margaret's three children along with their daughter, Annie. As the story begins Margaret and Annie are visiting the Hebamme. This is our first insight into the imagery that will continue throughout the story.
This story takes the reader on a journey through flashbacks, mysticism, and fevered thoughts. At times I found the story hard to follow, but as I read further I found myself unable to put it down. There are times of joy and laughter, while also having times of sorrow. You see the characters evolve and change. You not only see Annie grow up, but you also see others realize what a special child she is.
I would rate this book a 4 out of 5. There were some parts that needed to be reread before progressing.
