Having an uncle named Kevie seems like it would be a lot of fun. The fact that he wants to be called Kevie makes him seem youthful and exuberant. It makes me want to read more about him.

Please! Just call me Kevie! by Lord Christopher, is a non-fiction book about Chris’s uncle Kevin. It begins as Chris and his wife Anne are enjoying sitting on their upper front verandah. It is secluded from the street, quiet and serene. Their serenity is disturbed one day when Chris’s Uncle Kevin stops by, unannounced, and stays for a visit. During his visit, Kevin comes up to their verandah in the afternoons and joins them for their rum and cokes. One day Chris asks Kevin if he knows the history of the area where they live, the Hunter Valley region, which is north of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia. Not surprisingly, Kevin knows a lot about it. Kevin also has his own stories. Stories from the sixties, being the secretary to the coal union, traveling the country, meeting people, making friends, and eating chicken schnitzel, his favorite. Chris encourages Kevin to write these stories down, but he is not interested. Chris starts taking notes, which is the basis for the book.

I enjoyed reading about Kevin’s travels. Australia during and after the war is not something with which I am familiar. It was fun to read about all his adventures. I would have enjoyed meeting him and listening to his stories. I am glad that Chris finds his Uncle Kevin’s positive approach to dealing with people has started to help him.

I would have enjoyed learning more about Anne and what Kevin was saying to her that was so hurtful. I found the relationship between Kevin and his son Steve unclear and confusing, especially regarding what happens later in the book.

I rate this 3 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed reading about Kevin’s tales and life in Australia. There were a few sections that were a little confusing. There were only a few minor errors but they did not detract from the enjoyment of reading the book.

It’s a good choice for people interested in Australian culture and history. There’s humor, tragedy, and life lessons, all mixed together in Please! Just Call Me Kevie! By Lord Christopher.
