Just Die by E. Alan Fleischauer is a mystery-thriller about the powers that can end someone's life.

We meet Jake when he is hospitalized because of a stroke. Soon he discovers that he is gifted with a power. By pointing his finger at someone, he could make the person die. He confides about his powers to his finance Beth Ann and his friend Omar. They visit Omar's sister's place to test Jake's ability. However, the death of Dario Q. Mohammed, a drug dealer, leads Detective Gino and George to Jake's house for investigation. What will this investigation lead to? What about Jake's power? Will he use it for some good deeds?

I loved the writing in the book; no unnecessary description, no unnecessary addition, just the perfect one. The author tried to describe different perspectives of different people in the same situations. Honestly, the plot twists were the expected ones. I couldn't keep up with the relationship between Jake and Beth Ann. It was like they were forced to be together. It was more like they were best friends than a couple. No romance. Though I liked the bromance between Omar and Jake from the first time the two men met. Through Omar's story, we can learn that a person how much he is successful can hit rock bottom, but it's the strength and attitude that helps us to keep moving forward. I disfavor the ending Detective George got. Why? He was a good man, just struggling with life. I know every character cannot have what they want, but it was not a satisfying end for the detective. The power to unlive someone the moment you point your finger might be intriguing, but it may cause chaos if it gets into the wrong hands.

As a stand-alone book, it has 259 pages in the PDF version and is well-edited. It is written in the third-person's point of view. Simultaneously two investigations are going on. And they are carried out by different people for different reasons. We get backstories for every character, which helps us to know more about the characters. Will it keep you on the edge of your seat while reading? No. Will it keep you hooked up throughout the read? Yes.

I will rate this book 3 out of 5 stars for its writing and editing. The 2 stars deduction is because I am not satisfied with the ending for some characters. It will be a light read for mystery-thriller fans out there. I would not suggest this book for children as it has death scenes, drug abuse, and a little violence. Overall, it was an engaging read.
