We've all been at a point in our lives where we wished we were somewhere else, sometimes in a serene environment; other times, our bodies yearn for adventures, and we'd wish to be on a wild, exhilarating trip. Bluewater Walkabout: Into Africa by Tina Dreffin details the author's exciting travel adventures across the oceans of South Africa.
Tina Dreffin, along with her husband, Peter, and her two sons, Adam and Warren, decided to venture into the oceans of South Africa. This travel memoir tells of the family's adventures, glimpses of the author's past traumatic experiences, and how this journey helped her heal from the scars of the sexual assaults she experienced. The book also details the dangers and beauty of Africa without bias or stereotype.
The major reason I liked the book was that the author carefully weaved in her traumatic experiences alongside the exciting adventures she's had without a change of pace in her storytelling. She carefully synchronized humor, trauma, and adventure in such a way that one doesn't change the context of the other. I also liked the book because it sparks up the part of the reader that yearns for adventures, and her vivid description of each experience or place makes the reader picture each event as easily as possible, even if you've never been to the ocean or even seen a boat in your life.
The only reason I disliked the book was because I found it difficult to keep up with the abrupt switch between past and present events, which made the timeline of the story quite confusing.
I'd rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I deducted one star because of the abrupt switches between timelines that occurred throughout the book. The book was professionally edited, as I found no grammatical errors in it. I'd recommend this book to young adults and adults who love travel and adventures.
