The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid by Gary Robinson is a book that takes readers on an adventure. It centers on the lives of Gary Robinson and Duke Reynolds. Duke is a sword swallower who has been performing in the circus since he was a teenager.

He left home at a young age and learned some skills to fend for himself. Gary is a troubled kid who had a promising future but followed bad company. He is trying to get his life back on track when he meets Duke. How do they impact each other’s lives? Grab a copy to find out.

I like the detailed descriptions the author used. It made the scenes vivid in my imagination. The author showcased his writing skills with the different patterns of dialogue used for the characters. The background of every character was made known. It helped me relate to the characters and understand their decisions. I enjoyed reading about Duke’s character. He lived free with no worry about tomorrow, and I admired that about him.

I didn’t like how the author divided the book into three parts. It was hard to arrange the timeline, and this made comprehension difficult. I found many characters to be unnecessary additions; they were just used as fillers to pass the time and make the book longer. The author should have merged the three parts into one. I waited so long to read about the Chico Kid that I eventually lost interest when I got to that part. For these reasons, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

The author used this book as a medium to teach readers about the dangers of alcohol addiction. Alcohol is a dangerous thing, and readers should avoid abusing it. The editing was superb, as I found no grammatical errors. I recommend this book to those suffering from alcohol addiction. I also recommend it to those starting a new phase in their lives.
