High school can be fun but extremely hard, between higher expectations, learning to drive, getting your first job, hormones, and figuring out how you will fit into society after graduation. For Adam Caspian though, it is much harder. Feeling deep anger, aggression, and passion that he does not understand about himself or fully being able to understand his fellow peers, Adam is considered the outcast of his school. That is until Carly arrives and his whole world changes and makes sense for the first time in his life. Will they be able to save each other and their people, or will the Russian Iksha wipe all the Descendants from the face of the earth?

Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign will keep you on your toes throughout the entire read. From the shocking beginning to the twists, turns, and fights leading to the ending of the first book in the Scion Saga, readers can expect to be torn between loving and hating the characters. This science fiction dystopian reality is based in a land called Piure, an area in a futuristic America where everything is perfect and normal conversation starts with talking about the weather, is an exciting adventure that shakes up the dystopian genre.

Overall, this is a very interesting book, and I would rate it positively and give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. The characters have depth and mystery that keeps the reader interested. The plot is semi-predictable, but the twist and turns of how the characters get there is exciting. To this end, it can captivate its intended audience of young adults. The editing is obviously professionally done as there were minimal errors found within the book, and to be completely honest, I could have misinterpreted what the author was trying to say in those sentences. The book also has some areas that are non-translated Russian that were unable to be proofread as I do not speak Russian.

That said, the book has some negative aspects that readers should be warned about before reading. For these reasons, I did deduct a star from my rating. First, I would say this book should only be read by young adults. I would go as far as to put an 18+ reader age on the book due to the details within the book. At the very beginning of the book, the main character has some incestuous tendencies. These are explained later in the book, but reading through those parts at times was a little unsettling. The book contains lying, stealing, accidental and intentional murder, and terror at times. This is a suspenseful action book with minimal romance; as such, I would expect those things to be within the character's morale. There is explicit language in thoughts and actions throughout the book that follows the plotline but would not be for children. The main characters also speak about religion, but it is almost a made-up new religion.

I would recommend this book to friends and family that I know would enjoy this genre and story. I would give them the warnings listed above and a reminder that this book is the first book in a series. If you are looking for an entertaining book about new characters in a dystopian future, this one is one to check out.
