The future. Planning. These two things are a cause of worry for many individuals approaching retirement. What is the plan? How do you start? What goals do you want to achieve? As we get older most people find themselves asking these questions. Well, not to worry. E. Alan Fleischauer attempts to talk about these issues in a fun manner in his book, Reconfigurement. Reconfigurement is a book about planning. The author tries to bridge the gap between reality and tradition, which is a dilemma that potentially threatens the future of many individuals approaching retirement. He talks about retirement which is a crucial step in a career and one that most people dread. He gives tips such as at what age to retire and the things to consider before and after retirement. The author also talks about career choices and how to conduct career assessments. He also gives various online sites whereby one can access the various career assessment programs. The author also talks about insurance, the various types of insurance, and the advantages and disadvantages of each. He also covers the topic that captures the attention of many; health insurance. He breaks down the various health insurance programs in America, their advantages and disadvantages, and the various policies involved. The book also touches on wills, a topic that many may not be conversant with, and sheds some light on the topic. There is also a segment in the book that talks about part-time jobs and working from home which may be particularly useful in the pandemic.

Throughout the book, I loved how the author incorporates short stories to break the monotony of the subject being discussed. The book is also filled with humor and puns which made the book fun to read despite the seriousness of the topics being discussed.
I loved how the author tries to explain everything in detail but not in a way that would not be too overwhelming to the reader. The author also provides figures and statistics to back up his statements.

I however found the book a little hard to understand due to the complex terms used despite the author’s efforts to simplify it. Also, the book mostly focuses on the American system of doing things that may not apply to the non-American citizen. The book is also not exceptionally well edited because it has a couple of grammatical errors.

With all the above considerations, I rate Reconfigurement by E. Alan Fleischauer with four out of five stars. I give this rating because I find the book to be very informative and humorous. I could not give it a lower score because it is generally a good book and the author does a wonderful job ensuring the reader does not get bored by throwing in a joke or two.

I recommend this book to a mature audience and preferably, the American citizen. Readers who like fictional books and teenagers may find it a hard read because of the serious topics being discussed. For anyone who is concerned about the future, grab a copy and plan!
