[Following is a volunteer review of "Cynthia and Dan" by Dorothy May Mercer.]
Have you read stories about wars? Imagine a twenty-first-century war. Picture staging an intense fight over the Internet. That’s how much technology has developed. Cynthia and Dan is a science fiction book that combines action, technology, and romance.
Cynthia Patterson is a working-class lady. She works diligently for Senator McBride as a chief security officer. Cynthia thrives happily in her romantic relationship with Sergeant Dan MacIntyre until something unexpected occurs. Cynthia was stuck in traffic when a strange guy rescued her. One thing led to another, resulting in a nightstand with Sky Eastman. That particular event led to the end of her romantic relationship with Dan. Besides, Cynthia is determined to stage a war in cyberspace with the help of her brother, Glenn Patterson. They decide to recruit other members to a secret team for this operation. What will become of Cynthia’s relationship with Dan? Will this operation be successful? How will Cynthia recruit people for her operational team?
Cynthia and Dan is a 310-page book written by Dorothy May Mercer. This book is a romantic thriller that revolves around Cynthia Patterson, who is keen to defend her country against cyber terrorists. The author’s knowledge of military terminology is evident in this book. I like that the author used simple diction in the book. It caused a free flow and ease in reading the book. I admired the closeness of the Patterson siblings, Cynthia and Glenn, and their good sense of humour. The author described places and people in detail. Images easily formed in my imagination while I read. I loved the teamwork between Cynthia and her private investigators. I also admired the hard work of the computer scientists and the things they were able to achieve.
Cynthia’s personality interested me the most. After the incident with Sky and knowing her kind of job, I judged that she wasn’t as sceptical as a chief security officer should be. As I read further, I noticed how well she could switch roles and accommodate different aspects of her life. She knew how to balance her work and her love life. I also like that the book has several twists and is unpredictable. From the beginning, I already tagged Sky as a suspect and a spy. All these things made the book intriguing.
There are some things I dislike about the book. I think the book title was not a befitting one. One reason is that Dan was more of a passive character in the book. The book contained some unnecessary details, which made it unnecessarily lengthy. Because of these reasons, I rate this book four out of five stars. The book was professionally well-edited. I found no errors while reading the book. My favourite part of the book was when the team waited for their opponents, knowing their next move. It revealed the wonders of technology and its influence on the modern world.
I recommend this book to readers who love fiction, science fiction, action, and romance. Although separated by notice, this book contains high levels of sexual content. Therefore, I strongly advise that children and teenagers not read this book.
