Review of Snatched Up to Heaven for Kids

[Following is a volunteer review of "Snatched Up to Heaven for Kids" by Jemima Paul, Arvind Paul.]
In Snatched Up to Heaven for Kids by Jemima Paul and Arvind Paul, the reader follows along as a heterosexual nuclear family (i.e. a family that included a dad, mom, and three daughters: ages eight, six, and a baby). The story follows along as one daughter, Emma, dreams of visiting heaven, experiencing God, and other biblical references. She wakes up to tell her parents and sister who relate what she dreams back to specific scripture and ends with a call to action.
The visual images of the book are beautiful. I am a mother to a six-year-old and could see how those colorful drawings would entice him keep flipping the pages. There are rainbows, angels, and kids lying, which capture their imagination. The topic of afterlife is also very relevant, as this conversation is brought up in many households.
Although the pictures were enticing for young children, there wasn’t much diversity in the color of the character’s skin tones across the angels. Among the dozens of angels, there are three darker skin tone angels. In addition, despite being an introduction to Christianity and the concepts of heaven and hell, the story was written direct and felt polarizing, rather than taking a more inquisitive approach.
I rate this book three out five stars. I would deduct another star, but I think as long as the reader fit the specific mold of Christian, they will enjoy. For me, there wasn’t enough playfulness that children’s books typically have and there was a lack of any acknowledgment for other religions.
This book will interest parents who would like to give their Christian children a visual for concepts like heaven and hell and already have a strong foundation on Christianity as a family. The call to action at the end is a blunt example of this recommendation.
