[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a first book among the nine-book series written by Matthew Tysz. This is a fictional fantasy novel that introduces the new world called Voulhire. This was written in a combination of first-person perspective by a character named Galen Bray who is a refugee from a place called Lands of the Princes and third-person perspective. The world of Voulhire has this resemblance of Renaissance and Medieval periods of Europe with knights and kings. And then there’s also the World of Caromentis where a magical realm exists. The first few chapters are fast-paced and then it transitioned to a detailed introduction of each character. And then slowly unveil the mysteries and history of Voulhire.
This is a very easy to digest book. I love how Matthew Tysz presented the characters in the beginning, almost like a table legend, for you to go back and front if you wanted to review. It’s very convenient as you can get lost once new character was introduced in that story. It’s very interesting how the author manage to merge world of Voulhire in an ancient era and sort of a modern world through how characters spoke to one another. It’s consistent and almost like it is part of our history. I love how dark the storyline is with wars and bloodshed then some character sprinkle a bit of a light mood.
As I’ve said in the beginning, the first few chapters/part of the book is very fast-paced and then transitioned to introducing the characters and their lives, it almost halts the momentum of the story. Since it is the first book, it’s somehow understandable to give spotlight to the importance of the characters.
With all that said, I will give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. There were mysteries that were dropped in the first series and not yet revealed. I think this first book gives me reason to read the next series. The one point I did not give is due to some parts are highly detailed that it is not necessary (at least in my opinion). It also jumps from one plot to another, which you need to consider, but it’s easy to follow.
As a fan of films and books that has a setting like the medieval era, this is a good book for me. Most book series are hard to read due to historical settings and different terminology. But this book is like spoon-fed that you don’t have to worry about that. If you want to start exploring a book series, this is perfect for you, since it is easy to navigate and follow.
