[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is about a kingdom composed of people and mages. Meldorath is the Lord of Hillport, one of the Towns in Voulhire; he uses black magic to get his current position, but after a while he is nowhere to be found and people will think that he is dead. But, the presence of his name still lingers throughout the whole Kingdom that gives opportunities for other mages to introduce themselves. These happenings will make the Kingdom of Voulhire into complete chaos, that even King Wilhelm doesn’t know how to stop it.
What I like about the book is the innocence of Galen; he was able to trust people he doesn’t personally know. But, the purity of his mind was not something so negative; he was still able to decide for himself and not just listen to other people’s opinions. On top of that, I loved that he is very open in learning a new set of skills and continues the work of his uncle. Also, I liked that Rowan is very helpful to the needs of Galen even though it is not included in his salary. Moreover, I loved the personality of Eldus; he was the type of leader that everyone needed. He listens to his people and provides them things they need. Even his family possess this trait; they all want the Hillport to succeed and bring out its true potential and not just be seen as a town full of bad luck.
There is nothing that I don’t like about the book; the characters are well introduced, especially Meldorath. His name screams black magic and danger that makes the other cast frighten him.
I will rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars, because it is exceptionally edited and I didn’t notice a mistake. I am impressed on how the author was able to execute the character’s perspectives. The novel has a lot of cast, but the writer did a great job in giving them the ability to shine individually.
I will recommend this book to young adults, because the story is about magic, mages, and how people were able to coexist with this type of thing. The novel is very fictional and needs a great imagination which are very suitable to the young ones. Because the book is composed of different characters, it will become an advantage for them to find someone they can truly relate to.
