Review of Dark Matter Empire (Book 1)

[Following is a volunteer review of "Dark Matter Empire (Book 1)" by Alex Zadeh.]

Our hero Ryan Stathis is abducted by an alien ship and transported across the galaxy through a wormhole to another part of the Milky Way. This page turner was a rollicking adventure that was easy to read and a well written ride through the first book in a series. Fortunately, Ryan is not ill equipped for his journey, he has some professional skills, being an aeronautical engineer used to solving problems. He quickly employs these skills and more to solve the many obstacles he crosses along his way through planets, ships and encountering other species. He makes interesting companions that both help and hinder him in his quest to solve why he was chosen to be brought through the wormhole.
Dark Matter Empire (Book 1) by Alex Zadeh builds a believable science fiction world quickly and takes you through the plot with enough hooks and cliff hangers that you don’t want to put it down. The technical details of coding and aeronautics are enough to make you believe the story and not too detailed to get distracting. This short book, only 217 pages isn’t long enough to fully develop each characters backstory, but you don’t miss the details as you flip through the action. I enjoyed the pace of the book, it held my attention and it wrapped up quickly. It would be perfect for an overseas flight read.
The dialogue is simplistic and a little unpolished, especially for Ryan. This feels underdeveloped or rushed since Ryan is an aeronautical engineer, presumably with a lot of education. However, it’s passable with the pace of the adventure and the story. This is the only reason I rated it a 4 out of 5 stars. Otherwise this is a thoroughly enjoyable and fun read.
I liked the level of detail and thought put into the world that was built. I didn’t find apparent plot holes to jar me out of the story. Details and explanations were infused into the story that made me believe in what I read, like alien sports games, establishments, payment systems and lots of believable technology to make the world complete. The book was well edited, I only found one error.
I would recommend to anyone looking for a fast and fun book to take on holiday with them. Perfect for on the plane, train, beach, or by the pool.
