The book Relish Your Retirement by Florance Philip provides resources to retired women so that they may truly enjoy their retired life. Philip begins by discussing how women often face an identity crisis after retirement. She talks about the reasons behind this common phenomenon and suggests tips for overcoming this identity crisis. In subsequent chapters, she lists 501 ideas by which retired women can enrich their lives. The book is divided into various sections that deal with self-development, nurturing relationships, tapping into one’s creativity, etc.

The book is well-organized and easy to read. It is also a much-needed book. As Philip mentions, there are several books that discuss the financial aspect of retirement in great detail. However, there are not enough books that talk about the solutions to the emotional after-effects of retirement. Philip’s book offers a host of ideas to tackle the problems of loneliness and loss of purpose. There are ideas for introverted, introspective women and for sporty and extroverted women. Some ideas are geared toward improving fitness, some help build community, and others nurture creativity. Some activities within the book provide a renewed sense of purpose by providing a service to the community. There are also recommendations for women who may be looking for a new source of income.

Often immediately after retirement, women are excited to have all their time to themselves and revel in the freedom. Yet, as time goes by, one day may seem to merge into another and unhappiness may set in. Philip reminds her readers of all the little blessings that retirement brings. For example, working in a job meant requesting much-needed leaves and not being sure whether the request would be granted. It meant missing out on lovely weather because the best part of the day was spent working. At the end of each chapter are some very useful exercises. The exercises are cleverly designed to help the readers in zeroing in on their favourite ideas and then acting upon them.

I cannot find anything negative to say about the book.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. It is exceptionally well-edited. Throughout the book, Philip offers her readers respect and admiration for their achievements so far, and encouragement for the road ahead. It appears to be a true labour of love with an extensive and well-thought-out list of suggestions. There is something in it for every retired woman.

This book is suitable reading for women who are planning to retire or have retired. It will also be of interest to their loved ones who want to offer encouragement and support in this new phase of life.
