[Following is a volunteer review of "Kin's Quest" by Ron Root.]
"Kin's Quest" by Ron Root is a thrilling adventure that takes readers on a journey through a fantastical world filled with magic and wonder. Root's writing style is engaging and fast-paced, making it a page-turner from start to finish. The characters are well-developed and likable, each with their own unique personalities and motivations. The world-building is top-notch, with a rich history and vivid descriptions of the different landscapes and creatures. Overall, "Kin's Quest" is a must-read for fans of fantasy and anyone looking for an exciting and well-crafted tale.
The book's plot twists and intriguing elements were the highlights for me. The numerous questions that arose kept me fully invested in the story. Although I received some answers, there were always more questions to ponder. The story was told from various perspectives, some of which hinted at the motivations of the Ravens without giving everything away, maintaining my curiosity. Additionally, some of the characters used false identities, adding another layer of excitement as I tried to uncover their true identity.
My least favorite aspect of the book was the characterization of Rayna and a countess named Gwyneth that Rayna worked for. Rayna was difficult for me to understand, as her personality seemed a bit dull in the beginning and at times inconsistent. It wasn't until halfway through the story that I felt like I knew her. On the other hand, I didn't like Gwyneth due to her elitist attitude, which I could tolerate because of her position as a countess, but her interactions with Rayna were irritating to me. For instance, she was angry and offended that Rayna hadn't informed her about the map and the danger from the Ravens, despite having known each other for less than a week. My difficulties with Rayna's character and dislike for Gwyneth made it challenging for me to be invested in their part of the story. However, I liked the other characters and thought they were well written.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and plan to read "Nexus Moons" in the future. However, due to my struggles with Rayna and Gwyneth's characterization, I am giving it a rating of 3 out of 5 stars. There were 9 editing errors, including 5 name misspellings, so another round of editing may be necessary to ensure names are spelled correctly.
I recommend this book to fans of action and fantasy, but caution that it contains graphic violence and disturbing imagery, so it may not be suitable for sensitive readers or those under 20.
