Everything on Earth is related, and a series of events can come from the simple act of an unknown catalyst. This analogy is appropriate for describing Katherine's story. Praesidium by McKinley Aspen is a book from the Shadows in the Wind series. On Kathryn's birthday, her father disappears with her aunt, and the case remains unsolved. Years later, Kathryn gets offered a job with Hope and Global Support (HGS), so the story does not fade. Does this job relate to her father's disappearance? What is the HGS's purpose?
Kathryn's job is no ordinary job. The HGS deals with dangerous people trying to destroy the world by using people with abilities to stop them. Kathryn is a member of a four-person team where all her colleagues have unique powers that all manifest with time. Ashley, Michael, and Greg were her teammates. She soon realizes she has powers and discovers the mystery of her father's disappearance. This memory had remained suppressed due to the trauma that came from it.
There was a lot to enjoy about this book. Watching Kathryn discover her abilities and discover her aunt's deep secret and connection to her dad's disappearance was a surprise twist. It made it seem like a connection was brewing. The book contains many twists and turns. I enjoyed watching each mystery unravel and form a bigger picture. I felt like I was in a movie reading about the different supernatural creatures and each one's unique ability. The book has many themes that add to the thrill of the story and many subtle messages that can lead to character development, like the importance of friendship, trust, and teamwork. A researched concept of law enforcement agency failure and corruption leading to an unstable system resulted in the formation of unauthorized and underground groups seeking justice from their respective authorities. There were insights on relationship problems and how to overcome them by trusting your partner to make the right decisions.
I didn't dislike anything about the book; the plot was exciting and well-connected, and despite its fast pace, I enjoyed it. It had a few errors but didn't hinder my reading experience. The presentation of the themes and romance was subtle.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it is professionally well-edited. It was entertaining and adventurous. The author is a good storyteller and has an excellent writing style.
I recommend this book to readers interested in thrilling stories about the supernatural, magic, crime, and fantasy.
