Zona: The Forbidden Land by Fred G. Baker is a book that takes readers on an adventure. Randall Taylor, a scientist, ventures on an expedition to a forbidden land near Siberia. Colonel Volkov returns from the expedition as the only survivor. Randall is assumed dead, and his nephew is called to inherit his properties. His nephew, Grant Taylor, is a professor who resides in America. He meets his uncle's lawyer and closest friend, Boris Ustinov. Boris helps him settle and helps him acquire Randall's properties.

Grant finds Randall's journals in his house and becomes suspicious about his uncle's whereabouts. He starts asking questions, which makes Boris invite him over for dinner. Irina, Boris's daughter, has grown quite close to Grant, and they begin having an affair. Boris informs Grant at dinner that he is setting up another expedition team to go into Zona. Grant volunteers to use the opportunity to look for his uncle. Will he succeed? To find out, grab a copy.

I enjoyed how the author wrote the book in three parts. The first part was the preparation for the expedition; the second was the expedition; and the third was their experiences in Zona. It helped simplify the book and made comprehension easier for readers. I also liked the world-building done by the author. Zona is a magical place, and his descriptions helped me imagine it in my head. I also enjoyed how they were able to communicate with the animals. It was interesting to read and made me wonder how different the world would be if animals could talk.

I like how the different departments worked together to ensure efficiency. I liked that there were no filler characters, and all the characters played roles that impacted the story. My favorite character was Grant; he was determined to find his uncle. I admire that about him. He was also smart in making decisions, and I could see why he was the protagonist. Many would have given up in the quest to find Randall, but he kept going. One has to read the book to find out what happened to Randall.

I found some negative aspects in the book. I didn't like how some members of the expedition team felt they were better than the rest. It caused division among the team and reduced their efficiency. I also didn't like how finding Randall took so long. It made me lose interest at some point. I feel Irina's character isn't one to share Grant with anyone. So I found it odd that she was happy sharing Grant with Lada. For these reasons, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. I found no errors, indicating it was exceptionally well-edited. I recommend this book to lovers of mystery and suspense. Due to the high sexual content, I wouldn't recommend it to young readers.
