Women of Fire and Snow by Nati del Paso is a book filled with thrilling stories about women that touch on challenging subjects like rape, abuse, and gender-based violence without going into too much detail, instead, the author skillfully weaves in supernatural and mystical forces to give the stories much stronger suspense and a sensationalized feel. The stories are written from different standpoints, giving us a look into the mind of the ones who are being abused, the helplessness of the bystander, the regrets of the ones who ignored the cry for help, and even accidental perpetrators.

The author has done an outstanding job writing this book. Her writing has a way of luring people into the storyline, with its skillful descriptions. It felt like I was seeing and experiencing what the characters were going through giving me chills down my spine. She also weaved in just the right number of supernatural and mystical components to the story that makes it hard to believe that the supernatural parts of the stories aren’t real. “THE DEVIL YOU KNOW” definitely outdid itself in this aspect.

My only complaint about this book is that the author did not provide translations for her Spanish sentences or provide a glossary at the end of the book. Even though googling them helps, it does affect the state of immersion when compared to searching through the glossary or using a smaller size font to provide translations at the end of the sentence.

The lack of character background and open-ending is another aspect I am mulling over. On one hand, it adds to the suspense and thrill as I was thrown directly into the story and swept off my feet by the interesting and fast-paced plot, it even helps to give a stronger feeling of urgency and desperation like in “HONOR YOUR MOTHER.”On the other hand, in some stories, I feel it could be better if I was able to know more about the character’s backgrounds to understand their dilemma and decisions.“A SAFER PLACE” definitely would have been better if I could obtain a deeper look into Yessica’s private life as there were too many plot holes and I couldn’t adequately understand her considerable anger and repulsion towards the idea of her sister and her sister’s son leaving Mexico to stay with them.

People who enjoy thrillers, mystery, and magic realism will definitely enjoy this book. However, it contains profanity and erotic content which is why I can only recommend that adults and adolescents with parental supervision read this extraordinary book. This book is also professionally edited as I could only find one mistake. Considering everything, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it outdid itself in sharing the pain of the women in the stories and gives a convincing and powerful voice to issues that I wish more people would hear and understand.

Likewise, I like a book the characters' backgrounds are laid out. I think when the author addressed this issue, the book will be a wonderful read. Your review is honest and beautiful!
