The era of the coronavirus has exacerbated an already existing division, apathy, and doubt in the world. What valuable lessons did you learn from that? In his book, Grand Slam Life, Milton Haber recounts his experience as a medical professional before and during the unprecedented COVID-19 outbreak, especially the insights he gained as a COVID-19 survivor.
Milton was born in Laredo, Texas, to a Jewish mom and an American dad. He enrolled and studied medicine in Monterrey, Mexico. During his primary care social service year (also known as "pasantia" in Spanish), in a small town called General Escobedo in Mexico, he witnessed a life-changing event that helped shape his life. When he finally established his research institute, known as the Laguna Clinical Research Associates, in his hometown, Laredo, it was a lifelong achievement that was centered on helping humanity. Milton Haber, M.D., believes in a life script where everyone has a role to play in making the world a better place. As a practicing internist, he practices holistic medicine, where he treats both the symptoms and the patient as a whole. Due to his determination and unrelentlessness, his research institute was among those selected to help execute the Moderna vaccine trials in South Texas. This feat did not only help the underserved community but also change the lives of the people through expanded recruitment.
This 101-page non-fiction motivational piece was skillfully written, and I completely enjoyed its seamless flow and the enriching experience. The author's use of images clearly facilitated a deeper connection with the story. What interests me most about the book is the author's benevolent and selfless nature, an attribute he acknowledged his mother for. He made patient and staff care a priority as he strives to make a difference. I particularly cherished the integration of other people's thoughts about the author in the book. For instance, in chapter five, Stella, his receptionist, describes in her own words the philanthropic side of the author, where he frequently gives out Christmas or even birthday gift cards to his patients or even pays for their medications. I was awed by his optimism, which was displayed when he needed to convince the people to trust in the COVID-19 vaccine even when there was a general distrust of clinical trials and vaccines among the people due mainly to the "Tuskegee" event that occurred years ago within the black community. Read the book to find out more about that.
There is nothing to dislike about this thought-provoking and insightful book, as it clearly evokes a series of thoughts on how to make the world a better place in the minds of the readers with things as minute as smiles and hugs.
I would say this book is professionally edited, as I only found a few errors. So I am giving it a full rating of 5 out of 5 stars because of the valuable information it embodies and its well-structuredness.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others. Anyone who wants to know more about the impacts of COVID-19 will equally find it interesting. It will also be beneficial to young readers who want to enroll in medical school, as it contains very minor profanity.
