Phobia Relief by Kalliope Barlis is a non-fiction that focuses on phobias. It is a self-help book with an in-depth look on fears and their effects on human beings.

The book shares a spectrum of phobias, even the ones considered to be unreasonable. To Kalliope Barlis, all fears are illogical, especially the ones with no physical or evident danger. She shares examples of cases her clients share and also finds humor in some. There are facts on fears and phobias as well as tips on how to confront the fears. According to the author, the roots of the fears are not important. The most important thing is the awareness of what the fear is, and how to combat it. She shares the skills from her expertise in NLP( Neuro-Linguistic Programming).

Phobia Relief has several commendable aspects. To start off, the author gives a disclaimer that the information shared is not the only solution, and that in case of any issue a doctor or psychiatrist has to be seen. Additionally, she backs up her information with the skills and knowledge of NLP. As a psychology enthusiast,I find the strategy of NLP used equating to exposure. Exposure is a strategy in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that is used by therapists on clients to confront their issues. This is to show that the author considers the value of the information to readers as well as clients. Another positive aspect is the use of exercises after chapters which act as a prompt to the reader to confront their fears. Finally, the author is straightforward to the reader which comes off as a mother-child relationship or two genuine friends; tough-love.

The only dislikeable aspect of the book is the lack of empathy. Having an adoption of strategy from CBT, empathy is key aspect to connect with clients and gaining a better understanding. For instance, when she says ". I don’t care about who, what, where, why, and when you got this fear because the truth is, the past is over. I only care about how you are thinking now about your fear so that you can change your behavior now and into the future", it appears to be cold however the second sentence tones it down.

With all that said, the read earns 5 out of 5 stars as the dislike does not take away a lot from the information shared. Another reason is that the book is exceptionally and professionally edited as there are no errors whatsoever.

A recommendation of the read is to lovers of self-help books, psychology enthusiasts, NLP enthusiasts as well as whose trying to handle their fears and do not know where to begin.
