[Following is a volunteer review of "From Drift to SHIFT" by Jody B. Miller.]
From Drift to Shift: How Change Can Bring True Meaning and Happiness to Your Work and Life by Jody B. Miller is an amazing motivational book filled with stories of people who have drifted through life without knowing their purpose or have had unfortunate events happen to them and then made a shift to find their true purpose and meaning in life. The book is divided into four parts: Why Shift? When to Shift, How to Shift, and After the Shift.
There were many positive aspects to this book. After each story, there was a list of takeaways, allowing readers to reflect on what they just read. There were many that one could apply to their life; however, the two that resonated the most with me were, "Life can seem like one giant struggle. It is part of the journey" and "Be open to changing your perspective when things aren't going your way. We are not always right." The most commendable and memorable story was Chapter 2. Despite having cancer as a child and cancer reoccurring over the years well into adulthood, Emilee found a way to keep fighting even when she wanted to do nothing but give up. I also liked the fact that the author incorporated research and studies, which was done smoothly and tied into the stories well. At the beginning of each story, there were pictures of the person(s) that the story was about. This made the stories more personal because you could put a face to a name.
Many of us feel pain, whether physical or emotional, and each story touches on several aspects of hurt, whether sickness or depression, but the book demonstrates that all is not lost. People from completely different backgrounds overcame different adversities and went on to serve their purpose in life. At the end of it all, we all want to matter and find meaning in life.
Though it was a very good book with nothing I disliked about it, it was not an amazing book. As a result, I give this book four out of five stars. They were some heartbreaking stories—stories that could evoke emotions. This book doesn’t give all the answers as to how to become happy in life, but it offers inspiration to people who may feel as if they are at a disadvantage in life.
This book can be viewed as a self-help book and would appeal to readers who are facing rough times and need some sort of inspiration.
