[Following is a volunteer review of "A Dream For Peace" by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah.]
Dream for Peace: An Ambassador's Memoir was written by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah. This memoir contains great detail about the life and times of the author and the many challenges he faced. Born in Algeria during the French colonization, he saw how his people were treated and yearned for a free Algeria. Because of how brilliant he was, he was able to secure a scholarship to study abroad. He went on to become a profound and remarkable scientist who made groundbreaking inventions in the world of medicine. One of his major achievements was being the first scientist to give a hypothesis on what was later identified as the "Reverse Transcriptase Enzyme." Using his achievements in the world of science as a platform, Dr. Ghoulem worked earnestly to ensure peace and political harmony in the world.
There were many things I liked about this book. This memoir was written in simple language, which enabled the reader to connect deeply with this great man. Apart from the attributes of being a good ambassador and a wonderful diplomat, Dr. Ghoulem added storytelling to his many qualities. Despite the length of the book, I wasn’t bored at any stage of it. The author gave us insight into not only what happened on stage but also what happened in the background. The book was socially charged. The author has all his life desired a peaceful and free world and the development of Africa. He was opposed to racism and yearned for an independent Algeria.
Themes such as war, violence, and international politics were addressed in this book. The dynamics of third-world countries were explained. I learned a lot of new things from reading this book. I learned about some traditions of the Algerian people. I also learned about the pre- and post-colonial times in Africa. Generally, I fell in love with the author’s inspiring story and how, amidst his different challenges, he was able to pull through.
I couldn’t find any negative aspects of this book. It was professionally well-edited. Even though the author wrote about conflict, there was no use of profane words in the book. The book was detailed enough, and the style of writing was descriptive. The many places visited by the author were vividly described.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I found no reason to deduct any stars from this wonderfully written book. The content was knowledgeable and inspiring. I recommend this book to people who have an interest in politics and international diplomacy. People who want to learn more about Africa will find this book worth their while.
