Cynthia and Dan: Cyber War by Dorothy May Mercer captures the waging of cyber war by unsuspecting patriots of the United States of America on Islamic extremists and terrorists. Masterminded by Cynthia, she draws her brother, Glenn, into this super secret mission, and together they recruit computer geeks who would aid them in disrupting terrorist activities and organizations. With all this going on, Cynthia finds herself conflicted about Sky, a young man who has made her feel more than her boyfriend could ever. She wonders if he has approached her for her connections to Senator McBride. What is the real identity of Sky? And will these patriots succeed in their dangerous mission?
There are positive aspects to this book. The book is of moderate length and can be read at a go. It has a simple storyline and simple characters. It is straightforward without so many technical computer terms. The author also correctly indicated adult scenes in the book. This was very considerate and helpful. The book is also exceptionally edited. There were no errors, and it was a smooth and pleasurable read.
More so, the author included some bit of romance. It was not just all action and cyber talk. The whole drama of Cynthia finding a new man with a mysterious identity who could make her question what she had with her boyfriend, Dan, added a nice touch and suspense to the story. I wondered who Sky was and who Cynthia would end up with. It all became much more exciting and complex when a baby came into the mix. I admired Cynthia's impeccable work ethic, carefulness, and attention to detail. It is obvious she is passionate about the security of not just her boss but people at large. She is also smart, kind, and logical.
Despite these positive aspects, there are also negative aspects to this book. The book felt shallow and, perhaps, too simple. Asides from the identity of Sky, which left me a bit surprised, the book lacked the ability to excite me. There were zero plot twists, shocking revelations, or exciting action scenes. The characters were also poorly developed and created. The story could have been more elaborate, and the characters better developed. The storyline was also very unrealistic for me and felt exaggerated. I could not wrap my head around how Cynthia, a smart and capable woman, would have spent her years unhappy with her boyfriend, and yet, she never did a thing about it. Also, how Sky and Cynthia immediately fell for each other after spending a few hours in each other's company was unrealistic. More so, everything was virtually working out in the book; there was no major conflict.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because it is easy to read and possesses numerous positive points. I recommend this book to fans of adult romance novels and crime-fighting thrillers.
