[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fantasy novel that is the first story in a book series. The story follows Galen Bray, who was given a chance to live a different life by his great uncle. Bray grew up on an island plagued with war and suffering when he was brought by his great uncle to a small part of Voulhire called Magnum Caelum. There, as he slowly settles in, he found a world so different from what he had known. Contrary to the impoverished life he had so far, his great uncle left him his business and house before he died. Bray tries to build a life in the small town while slowly discovering the world and himself. However, dark forces are looming on the horizon. People with malicious intent are slowly making their move. Mages and their magics aren’t only consisted of good people, some wield it for their gain. Could these unseen forces at work affect the life which Bray is set to discover and build?
While Bray is building his new life, other characters are also woven into the story as it progresses. The king of Voulhire, Wilhelm, who had shown his concern for the land he is governing, and the new Lord of Hillport, Eldus, who demonstrated his hopes and dreams in the city he is tasked to reconstruct from its dark past. I like how the story is laid out for its readers. It has a wonderful narration that is vivid and descriptive of the world it is trying to show. This style of writing wouldn’t bore you. The kingdom of Voulhire is gradually formed in the reader’s mind as the author carefully and patiently unravels the story. The textures, colors, and motifs of each city under Voulhire were brilliantly illustrated. The cities having their own identity and culture are the main highlight of this first book. These details are pivotal to the story’s plot and characters.
I didn’t find anything that I dislike about this book. What I’ve found is a great start to a story of adventure. A great introduction to a series.
I gave this an excellent rating of 4 out of 4 stars. There are no typographical errors and it is professionally edited. This book also impressed me and made me feel the need to read the whole series. It has so much to offer.
I recommend this to readers of fantasy novels as it will surely satisfy one’s craving for adventure and exploration of other worlds.
