In the book logjam of a beauteous mind: infinitely gentle woman by Peter Simon Karp; a man recounts a couple's fight against a terminal illness. It came as a surprise to Karp and his wife Mona when the doctor diagnosed her with stage 4 cancer in 1993. Doctors gave her three to six months to live. The author describes their emotional devastation. Mona who was in her mid -50s at the time and a mother of two sons had never been a smoker nor tried to experiment on any other form of drugs, such a diagnosis was not expected. After getting a second opinion from another doctor who gave them the same diagnosis, Mona started treatment at a New York cancer centre. Karp leaves his high-tech firm to take care of Mona. After going through the series of chemotherapy she develops physical side effects, and her cognitive function was greatly affected. Her short-term memory and concentration were involved; he calls it a "chemo logjam" in his book. The smart former English teacher who enjoyed traveling experienced psychotic episodes. The journey to recovery had its difficulties like Karp having a medical scare and was later on diagnosed with colon cancer. Through it all, Mona fights for her survival from the disease. The power of love is quite clear in the book as the couple shares all their life experiences with love both good and bad moments

The writer's style makes the book easily understandable as he cuts out the jargon of what could be overly complicated issues such as types of cancer trials and what they entail making it informative. Moments are also captured with clear, powerful, and good choice phrasing engaging the reader and bringing out the melancholic mood.

The book has been professionally edited with only a few grammatical errors which are minute like the misplacement of commas.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The author brings out lyricism in a very touching manner in the book. He also uses his creative skills to break the emotional environment by featuring some scenes in which the blackbirds are said to warn of a coming blizzard. The language used is easily understood and has very few grammatical errors.
The book can be read by persons of all ages. For patients and caregivers experiencing the same situation, it's a valuable asset. As it's an inspiration on how love and support for our significant others are of the essence.
