[Following is a volunteer review of "Broken: Book 1" by Braxton Cosby.]
Broken Book 1 of The Young Hellions Series is a book of the young adult fantasy genre written by Braxton A. Cosby, an inspiring writer. The book possesses an eye-catching cover that represents the protagonist and the chaotic environment at this time. Keesa stands up for herself and her friends against the enforcers and escapes with them hoping to find resistance.
Keesa Donovan is a 17-year-old girl, who lost her mother while she was giving birth to Kiran, Keesa's little brother. The world makes a sudden decision to plant nuclear bombs worldwide and it destroys half of the population on Earth. Keesa and Kiran are safely escorted by their uncle Raymond, and later they get captured by the enforces as slaves.
The radiation from the bombing makes it difficult for a survivor to wander across the 'deadlands', as they call the bombed areas. Not only that but also the Ashers and Hoarders who are mutated people, try hunting down anyone who is seen on the deadlands. Hence, no one tries to change the enforcers' way of doing things, as they can get killed either way. However, Keesa, along with her friends, find their way towards freedom.
I loved how the characters were created by the author. The main character Keesa as an example was especially beautifully made. She was challenging, and courageous and had many leader-like qualities. Yet her overthinking nature was popping out just to ensure that her character is also mediocre-ing. The setting of the plot was in a faraway future where all the happenings of this story were realistic. The plot itself is original and it had me excited till the last moment. Most of the time, I felt that I was included in the adventure as the protagonist because of the 1st person point of view that the author used. His writing style was up to my taste and very unique.
The book had not been professionally well edited. Thus, I found it a bit hard to understand at first. Moreover, there were some parts of the storyline, which was not explained in the end; Some parts that mostly held my curiosity were missed or left out by the author.
That is why I am rating this book three out of four stars. One star was taken out because of the constant grammar and typing mistakes I found and for the left-out parts. I recommend teenagers and young adults to read this book and hesitate not because this is made especially for you.
