[Following is a volunteer review of "My Little China Girl" by Gordon MacRaa.]
The novel, My Little China Girl written by Gordon MacRae, portrays the life of a man, Thomas who is first posted to Vietnam as a tourist for creative writing by his company, which depends on the federal government for funds, but is then dismissed from his job on a charge of "immoral behavior". Since he was dismissed from his job, hence Vietnam too. Through the journey of life, moving from one country to another throughout Asia, he realizes that his urge and thoughts going from one woman to the next to satisfy his sexual urges were just his subconscious reminding him of his long lost wish to find a woman whom he can spend the rest of his life with. The story mostly plays on his journey through one bottle of alcohol to another with his friend or drinking partner and author, Grant. Ever wanted to see what happens when a man's love for a woman crashes with life's ups and downs? Not to mention his growing habit to drink without reason? Well then, this is the book for it.
The one thing I loved about this book and to note, was the fact that the character, Thomas never gave up even after his life took a different turn when dismissed from work in Vietnam.
On the other hand, I didn't like the arrangement of the book. It was not categorized into chapters but rather numbers which started again when a different heading was given. It was easy to lose who exactly was speaking as there was no intentional note to go by. Most part of this novel focusing on Thomas' point of view was soliloquy or thoughts flying around and was quite a bit boring compared to the adventures that would have been expected. Again, the first part of the book was very confusing and uninteresting as though they were thoughts from a drunken author. Nothing keeping a reader at the edge of his or her seat. It also wasn't well edited, having a lot of typographical errors, though some of them were as though they were intentional to show the dept of one's feelings.
I strongly rate the book My Little China Girl by Mr. MacRae a 2 out of 4 star. It is quite interesting but doesn't give all the thrills desired.
Therefore, in my recommendation, your wanting to read the book is self-employed. It isn't a book to roll over for. You can read it, if you want to but note that it may come across as "boring" at some point or would need a bath after reading as this book contains some content of Misogyny.
