As a small boy from Aïn Beïda, Algeria, Ghoulem dreamt of being the best acrobatic rider and gaining fame in his hometown. As he grew up, he noticed the injustices his people experienced and the oppression and injustice others in various parts of the world also experienced. The desire to liberate the oppressed birthed his passion for justice and peace. He made it his mission to fight for justice - through dialogue. His formal education, work experience, and communication skills made him a force to be reckoned with.

In A Dream for Peace, we learn about the life of Dr. Ghoulem Berrah through his own words. In this memoir, Dr. Berrah shares aspects of his childhood that molded him into the fine man he turned out to be. He narrates his story from his childhood, his experiences as a student, his career, and diplomatic work under president Houphoet.

This memoir is narrated from a first-person perspective by Dr. Berrah himself. His skillful use of words, passion for humanity, and the evident gift of the gab made for a pleasant and moving read.

There are many positive aspects to this book, but my favorite is Dr. Berrah’s character. He is a selfless, committed, and resilient human being who placed his life in danger for the sake of others. Dr. Berrah was a liberal diplomat who selflessly served people from various denominations without prejudice. The memoir is lengthy, and the pictures added a pleasant element that kept me alert and captivated.

Dr. Berrah has contributed immensely to humanity, and his teachings will live on. His life journey was not smooth. He faced trials and tribulations of various sorts, but he remained steadfast in his beliefs and mission. His dreams of being a well-known acrobatic rider changed when he realized that his culture was being eroded. Fully cognizant of the hardships and injustices of this world, he challenged systems and remained steadfast in his work to achieve peace and unity. I have no negative feedback concerning this memoir, as I thoroughly enjoyed the teachings and wisdom shared in this book.

The book appears to be professionally edited, as I only spotted a few errors. The memoir is well-written and informative. It deserves a wholesome rating. I, therefore, award it 4 out of 4 stars It is inspirational and educational. The insight shared in the memoir is unparalleled, and Dr. Berrah’s character and bravery are admirable.

I recommend this book to humanitarians, readers who are passionate about science, and history students. Readers interested in African history will also learn more about the continent from this memoir.
