Tucker Mason lost his wife but still feels her presence. It took him a very long time accepting that she died. Tucker works for a company that relocates him to Virginia to oversee the built of a new maximum-security prison in the Appalachian Mountains. On his very first day in town, someone follows him from the job site and runs him off the road. Recovering from the accident, he meets a local woman, Sally, who helps him recover and Sally becomes Mason's confidant and friend.

He rents a small house in the mountains of Low Creek in Virginia, close to the job site where the prison will be built. It doesn’t take long before strange things start happening in and around his rented house. Could this be linked to the person running him off the road, warning him, or could it be that the house in the mountains is haunted?

When a security guard gets arrested on the job site where the prison is being built, Tucker Mason discovers that drugs are being delivered and sold through his work site. He also discovers that the small town he calls home for the time being is full of drug addicts and drug dealers, that there is a really big problem with drug abuse with the local people and this takes him back to his childhood and he remembers his mother, mostly absent from his life because she too was an addict. He needs to find the drug dealers on his work site and solve the mystery surrounding the mountains and what is happening at his rented home.

This was a difficult read at first because the sentences are very long. The very long sentence structure affected my reading comprehension and makes the text hard to read. That being said, I have to admit that it did not stop me from enjoying the story. It was a captivating read with mystery and intrigue. I liked the fact that the author, Thomas A. Brigger, takes you back and forth through Tucker’s life by using his memories to tell the reader about his childhood, the problems with his mother and father, and the struggles of loosing loved ones, loosing his wife and now living alone as a grown man not really having a home to call his own.

He also talks about the struggle with drug abuse and the family members of the addicts and how it affects their lives. I write this as a separate paragraph to highlight the fact that it is a big part of this book so readers are aware before making the choice to read it.

The book was exceptionally well edited and also well developed. I found no profanity or religious content while reading the book. I give Beyond the Higher Ground a 4 out of 4, because even though the sentences were very long, it was a really good story with a perfect ending. I would recommend this book to all readers with an interest in mystery and suspense but caution those who are sensitive to substance abuse.

I have read many reviews of this book and all of them have been positive. I think the best way to get over a loss like Tucker’s is a change of scenery. Also, figuring out a mystery couldn’t hurt either, could it?
