Taking Charge, Volume 2: More Stories on Aging Boldly, is an informal handbook for those willing to contemplate, research, and engage with others on the concerns of aging. Weiss covers caregiving, consumer fraud, employment, lingering student loan debt, health and wellness, long-term care, mental health, relationships, travel, veteran affairs, and in the time of COVID, the impact of social isolation on individuals and their families.

Weiss introduces narratives for his chosen topics. For example, under Pets: Remembering Abby, he introduces us to a piece published in the Woonsocket Call on September 4, 2016, the author of the story tells the audience about formally adopting an impaired chocolate Labrador retriever from the local animal shelter. Years later, Abby, the Labrador became sick and ultimately passed away. At the end of the piece, Weiss adds the URL to www.RainbowBridge.com to help readers cope with the loss of a pet.

In contrast to the more intimate narrative of Remembering Abby, Weiss switches to a more formal narrative, highlighting a report from www.HealthAffairs.org, that “forewarns that in the near future middle-income seniors in need of assisted living with supportive services, will be priced out” of that level of care. At the end of sharing the findings of this report, Weiss refers his audience to review the study he outlined directly online.

While Weiss makes many salient points throughout the book, this work as a whole is not a cohesive read-through. It is, however, a worthy effort and acts as a general road map for anyone negotiating through the many dimensions of the aging process interested in consulting resources. Reading through the book by topic(s) of interest may be a better approach to fully appreciating the work rather than attempting a cover-to-cover read. As such, the book deserves a 3 out of 4 rating.
