Review of Unlight
Unlight by Chandra Shekhar is a thrilling science-fiction book. The Millers, namely Nicole, her two daughters, Jessica and Anna, and her mother, Elizabeth, get rescued at the last minute by Larry, Nicole's fiancé. The world is on the verge of collapsing after a dust cloud named the Shroud has covered the Earth's surface and restricted sun rays from reaching the ground, causing the temperature on Earth to drop below minus 120°C.
Larry, a jack of all trades, has constructed a dome-like structure to protect his only family, the Millers. It seems no one except for Larry considered implementing precautionary measures when scientists warned the public of the approaching dust cloud from space. Presidents and others in power gave the matter limited interest, which, in the end, sealed the fate of their nations. Are the Millers and Larry the last living individuals on Earth? Will this structure sustain them and prove sturdy enough for possibly 20 years? If so, is there a chance that the Shroud has disappeared by then? Nothing is evident, but it seems they have to survive regardless.
Even though the plot retains conventional themes (the possibility of being the last surviving humans on Earth), it is unique in the way it proposes living in a confined space with limited resources. The problems the crew encountered in each of the six domes were realistic, like issues with the heating system, energy consumption, CO2 levels, and getting used to the confined space for years to come. Each one of the crew was admirable and had a distinguishable demeanor. The journals they wrote were incredibly humorous and heartwarming to read. Noticing the differences in each person's writing style and personal thoughts throughout the years was a welcome surprise. Despite the insufficient description of the crew's appearance, their personalities were excellent. It was difficult to dislike any of them, even the ever-critical Jessica. Jessica's commentary on Larry's actions made me giggle, especially since she is relentless and sees herself as all-knowing. On the contrary, Larry accepts every statement without putting up a fight. Despite including topics like engineering, horticulture, and meditation, the book does not contain much technical language, making it understandable and even somewhat educational. I remained engaged throughout the book and felt thrilled when a twist approached. Almost every chapter had a cliffhanger towards the end, causing me to flip the pages vigorously. The most notable aspects were the progression, pacing, and character development. The ending tied everything nicely; it was the perfect mix of ambiguity and clarity.
I did find a few negatives. The book could benefit from even more drama. Also, sometimes what occurred seemed too good to be true. Thankfully, the book does not advance based on this aspect. Still, I noticed instances where this aspect was present, such as when issues were easily resolvable because of the presence of the required item. Jessica also seemed to understand whatever was happening and was never incorrect with her assumptions, which felt unrealistic.
Considering everything, I rate this book a three out of four stars for detecting more than ten errors. The negatives are negligible when compared to the positives, but the presence of more than ten errors cannot be overlooked. A final round of proofreading would eliminate this issue and grant the book a perfect rating. The book contains sporadic profanities and no sexual content. Fans of books that include science fiction, botany, psychology, and engineering will appreciate what the book offers.
