[Following is a volunteer review of "Beyond the Higher Ground" by Thomas A. Brigger.]
As the name goes, Beyond the Higher Ground drugs, high end drugs if I may say, the likes of oxycontin and methamphetamine take their victims to obnoxious levels and increased dependency with time. The book by Thomas.A.Brigger portrays the battle against illegal drugs where our main character Mason Tucker, is stuck between building a hospital and combating illegal drug trade for the effects it causes to it's users especially his new acquired neighbour, Melanie and Jenna. He faces some mistreatment which is apt to lead him out of the place and avoid his interference.
The book portrays alot of persistence since Mason Tucker is faced with severe resistance almost like walking against a current yet he doesn't cower away but faces it head-on with some exterior help. Mason Tucker seems to be well concerned since he was posted to the place in order to work on building but goes out of his way to even investigate his supposed drug dealer neighbour. The society is satirized entirely since there was even an attempt to end his life which he survived.
The society tends to eliminate anyone who tends to be against their trajectory as portrayed in the book. The book is well done and has alot of twists and well paced riddles. Fortunately the book is free of heavy swearing as expected since the topic of drugs entails the same. Sexual immorality is also not included as opposed to the same being prevalent in the drug area. The aspect of selflessness is something to pick from the book since Mason was given a shove by his closest allies and he did well to actually pay the favor back. The author does well to implant an image in the readers mind by giving vivid explanations to some places an activities.
I also liked the grammar used by the author since it can build a readers English and generally speaking skills. The use of dialogue is great and takes the storytelling to another level where it becomes real time rather than a history book. We also get to understand that our decisions have consequences and we should be wise in making them especially matters relationships since the rooster will come to crow if we make wrong decisions. Drugs are not to be misused if I may conclude and they are related to so many other criminal acts.
I give the book 4 out 4 stars since it is educative, fun and has these moments that we all want to read about. I would recommend it to youth since they should get to know the consequences of the drug dealing and how they can end up in bad positions in the society especially in terms of relationships.
