[Following is a volunteer review of "Rescuing General Patton" by Curtis Stephen Burdick.]
Rescuing General Patton by Curtis Stephen Burdick follows the journey and eye-widening experiences of a heroic Army Ranger officer and his men, as they conduct a secret ‘suicide’ mission to rescue General George Patton who was being held captive by the enemy. The General disguised himself as a dead colonel in the hopes that the enemy would not find out prior to him being rescued. The novel is set in the World War II era and, while it is a work of fiction, it contains some factual information of the conditions in that era.
I found the book to be captivating. My interest was piqued from chapter 1 to the very end. I liked that the author was very detailed and descriptive, causing me to feel as if I was right there experiencing what the soldiers were going through; feeling every pain, anger, triumph or disappointment that they felt. For example, when guns were being fired or grenades thrown, by reading Burdick’s words I could hear the sounds in my head as if I was there in the midst of the battle. In addition, even though the book is set in the World War II era, it is an enjoyable read even if you are not a ‘war buff’. Another aspect of Rescuing General Patton that I liked is that it had a creative blend of adventure, thrill and even a little romance.
The only aspect of the book that I found to be negative was that sometimes the author switched settings suddenly while I was still emotionally invested in it. For instance, we would be on the battlefield and then we would be taken to the executives’ mansion. The changed in setting is always clearly marked though by a line and a paragraph change.
I rate Rescuing General Patton 4 out of 4 stars. This book was professionally edited and I found no errors in my reading. It was creatively written, very entertaining and satisfying to read. Also, it is evident that a lot of research was done by Burdick prior to writing this masterpiece. It might be a cliché to say this but this book had me on the ‘edge of my seat’ while reading it.
I think this book would appeal to persons deeply interested in or wishing to learn a bit about the World War II era. Also, adults who enjoy a good suspense novel would really enjoy it. In addition, I recommend it for book clubs, as it contains some controversy that would make for very interesting discussions.
