Hannah Mercer,a 36 years old mennonite woman experienced the shock of her life at the sudden death of her husband Horrace and her two sons. Despite the heartbreak and sorrow, she was able to forge ahead by starting a mobile dry goods store named Hannah's Goods and Effects, using her metro convertible van.

The novel "Goods and Effects" by Al Schnupp reveals how Hannah shuttled from towns to cities in her metro living her life with passion and joyfully satisfying her neighbours needs while making new friends whose lives she would impact on greatly despite her challenges. In the course of the novel, as she criss-crosses the missouri countryside, you will get to meet characters like Darla, LeRoy, Naomi and Vivian whose stories will engage you and compel you to read more.

The novel has over 20 years of Hannah's life covered in less than 200 pages. The narrative is well constructed and the writing as well as the language the author used were authentic. The book places the reader in suspense, trying to know more about how each character's story ends.

Schnupp depicted the story to be a mixture of sorrow , joy, regrets and achievements. However, some pages are filled with boring and irrelevant details as well as some repetition of points previously made.

I give this novel a 3 out of 4 stars because the lexical and grammatical structures used were good.

This book is recommended for people who have interest in books set in the sixties. Also, people who are sorrowful and downtrodden as a result of the demise of a loved one, can derive strength and courage from Hannah's story.
