[Following is a volunteer review of "Twisted But True" by Darren Burch.]
Twisted but true is a collection of horrifying and hilarious stories that allow us to walk in the shoes of police officers and have a better understanding of their jobs. Darren Burch, who is the author of the book, descriptively shares his life experiences and traumas and how these influenced his family structure and career choices.
The author's evolution from being an awkward teenager to being an enthusiastic cop that gets himself in awkward situations was both funny and heartening. I loved that he took what he learned in his school days and in the military and used it in his job. Besides being an outstanding police officer who is heroic and brave, he is a philanthropist, a phenomenal dad, dedicated husband and collaborative colleague.
Readers will learn a lot from Darren's goodwill, work ethic and citizenship. Adults and parents will enjoy how this book approaches Darren's struggle attempting to balance marriage, parenting and a demanding career, they will most likely relate with all this.
I detected elements of racial profiling in the book, in some instances Darren assumed the involvement of a person of colour in criminal activities based on their skin colour. I doubt that Darren is racist because there are no indications of this in the book. Not only that, but I assume that he was programmed subconsciously to be more suspicious of people of color because he probably dealt with numerous crimes in which they were involved.
The book was an interesting and amusing read. However, it had sexually explicit content and outdated and shaming terminology that could be potentially offensive to women and people of the LGBTQIA+ community. I did not notice any errors and I think it was exceptionally edited. Therefore, I would rate it three out of four stars. I am deducting a point due to the negative points I have already explained above, that I view to be important to note in the modern society.
